Information
Description
What It Is:
This is an educational worksheet focused on Canadian biomes. It includes a map of Canada where students are instructed to sketch and shade the areas covered by five different biomes, using a different shade for each and creating a legend. The worksheet also includes tables for students to list the major biotic and abiotic features of each of the following terrestrial ecosystems of Canada: Mountain Forest, Tundra, Boreal, Grassland, and Temperate Deciduous Forest. There is also a reference to specific pages in a textbook.
Grade Level Suitability:
This worksheet is suitable for grades 7-9, potentially even high school level, depending on the curriculum. The task requires map reading skills, knowledge of biomes, and the ability to differentiate between biotic and abiotic factors. The complexity of identifying and classifying these features makes it appropriate for middle school and early high school students.
Why Use It:
This worksheet reinforces learning about Canadian geography, ecosystems, and the characteristics of different biomes. It helps students develop map reading skills, analytical skills by identifying biotic and abiotic factors, and critical thinking by connecting biomes to their geographical locations. It also encourages research and textbook reference skills.
How to Use It:
Students should first read the assigned pages in their textbook (pgs. 56-59). Then, they should use different colored pencils or shading techniques to represent each of the five biomes on the map of Canada, creating a key to identify each biome. Finally, they should research and complete the tables for each biome, listing the major biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) features. They also need to complete textbook questions 2, 4 and 5 on page 59.
Target Users:
The target users are middle school and high school students studying geography, ecology, environmental science, or Canadian studies. It is designed for students who are learning about biomes, ecosystems, and the characteristics of different geographical regions within Canada.
