Information
Description
What It Is:
This is a cladogram practice worksheet. It features two exercises. The first involves a table where students mark the presence of characteristics (cells, backbone, legs, hair, thumbs) in different animals (slug, catfish, frog, tiger, human). Below the table is a blank cladogram for students to complete based on the table. The second exercise presents a similar table with animals (salamander, mouse, jellyfish, koala, salmon) and characteristics (jaws, limbs, hair, placenta), marked with plus and minus signs. A blank cladogram is provided for students to complete based on this second table.
Grade Level Suitability:
This worksheet is suitable for middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) biology students. It requires an understanding of basic animal characteristics and the principles of evolutionary relationships represented by cladograms.
Why Use It:
This worksheet helps students practice creating cladograms based on given characteristics. It reinforces their understanding of evolutionary relationships, shared ancestry, and the development of traits in different animal groups. It improves critical thinking and data interpretation skills.
How to Use It:
Students should first analyze the provided tables, understanding which animals possess which characteristics. Then, they should use this information to construct the cladograms, placing animals with the fewest shared characteristics at the base and those with the most shared characteristics at the tips of the branches. Students should fill in the blank spaces on the cladogram to show where each animal belongs.
Target Users:
The target users are middle and high school students studying biology, particularly evolution and classification. It's also helpful for teachers looking for practice worksheets on cladogram construction.
